Ultrasound Medical Glossary.

My name is Traycy. I will be studying in the ultrasound medical program next semester. This glossary is for students who are in the medical field but also for those who are curious and want to learn a few terms.

acoustic beam
phrase
Technology that mixes and delivers the sound so it appears to come precisely where the action is happening on screen.
Example: A-Scope technology instantaneously displays the echoes found in the transducer's acoustic beam.
fr: faisceau acoustique
body tissue
noun
A group of cells that have similar structure and that function together as a unit. There are 4 basic types of tissue: connective tissue, epithelial tissue, muscle tissue, and nervous tissue.
Example: The heart and the brain doesn't have the same type of body tissue.
fr: tissu corporel

couplant gel
noun
A medium, typically a viscous, nontoxic liquid or gel, that transmits ultrasonic energy from its source to the object to be stimulated.
Example: Put a small amount of shear wave coupling gel on the transducers.
fr: gel couplant
null
depth
noun
The distance from the top or surface to the bottom of something.
Example: The depth of the water is usually 1-6 m deep.
fr: profondeur
echo
noun
A sound or series of sounds caused by the reflection of sound waves from a surface back to the listener.
Example: We can hear an echo if I scream that way.
fr: écho
a boy shouting towards a wall that makes his sound reflecting the wall and coming back to him.
examination
noun
A detailed inspection or investigation.
Example: An examination of marketing behavior.
fr: examen
null
frenquency
noun
A rate at which a vibration occurs that constitutes a wave, either in a material (as in sound waves), or in an electromagnetic field (as in radio waves and light), usually measured per second.
Example: Different thicknesses of glass will absorb different frequencies of sound.
fr: fréquence
null
hertz
noun
A unit of frequency in the International System of Units is defined as one cycle per second.
Example: .
injury
noun
An act that damages or hurts.
Example: The patient had a major injury around the abdominal area.

fr: imagerie médicale
null
patient
noun
A person receiving or registered to receive medical treatment.
Example: The patient described his symptoms to the doctor.
fr: patient(e)
null
pregnancy ultrasound
noun
An imaging test that uses sound waves to create a picture of how a baby is developing in the womb.
Example: She needed to get a pregnancy ultrasound to see how is the baby doing.
fr: échographie de grossesse
A human foetus in their mother's womb.
probe
noun
A slender surgical instrument for exploring the depth or direction of a wound, sinus, or the like.
Example: The ultrasound probe can be pushed firmly against the patient's skin.
fr: sonde
null
pulser
noun
The pulser circuit generates electrical impulses that are applied to a transducer causing the transducer to emit an ultrasound pulse.
fr: pouls
null
scan
noun
A type of test that makes detailed pictures of areas inside the body.
Example: The patient underwent a brain scan.
fr: .
null
sonogram
noun
A computer picture of areas inside the body created by high-energy sound waves.
Example: A sonogram is the result of a ultrasound.
sonographer
noun
A specialist in the use of ultrasound.
Example: Miss Anne will be the sonographer that will be taking care of me today.
fr: échographiste
null
sound wave
noun
A wave of compression and rarefaction, by which sound is propagated in an elastic medium such as air.
Example: A sound wave caused the diaphragm to move, forcing a needle to move up and down in the water.
fr: onde sonore
null
transducer
noun
A device that produces sound waves that bounce off body tissues and make echoes.
Example: They are using the transducer on the mother's belly.
fr: transducteur
